Hesston Speedway swung open the gates for the 2006 racing season with heavy hearts, as Bobby Deem, brother to flagman Gary Deem and the infield front stretch line up man died Friday night.
Gary Heckman and Nathan Gramley led the PA 305 Springs to the start, with Heckman taking the lead at the start. Heckman bobbled exiting the fourth turn and lost the lead to Gramley on the next lap. Gramley led for several laps, but on the 11th lap, Heckman returned to the lead and never looked back as he picked up his first win of the season. Gramley was second, Joe Zap was third, Rob Mellott was fourth and Todd Spangler. Heat wins went to Rob Mellott, Joe Zap and Todd Spangler.
